Makoto Takahashi was born in Yonezawa city, Yamagata Prefecture in 1974. In 1993 he learnt Nihon-ga from Chūichi Konno (1915~2006) and Tetsuo Matsumoto (1943~2012) at Tohoku University of Art and Design. In 1997 his art was chosen by the Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Art Institute) for the longest running public exhibition of Nihonga. Since then, his works have gone on to be chosen total of 28 times for this exhibition held twice a year. From 2003 to 2004 Takahashi studied abroad in Italy, receiving inspiration from across the country. Since returning from Italy the main focus of his work has been the expression of the light and shadow of Italian landscapes. In 2009 Takahashi went on to finish his doctorate at the Tohoku University of Art and Design. In 2010 his work depicting the light, shadows, and blue skies of Italy was received wide praise leading to his work being displayed in the ‘Onward Gallery’ of Tokyo’s Nihonbashi as well as department stores all across Japan.
